Benefits of Using ETFE as a Roofing Material

ETFE roofing in China

Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) is a thin, translucent copolymer sheeting. For several reasons, ETFE has become a popular construction material that is utilized in buildings all over the world, including the Beijing National Aquatics Center in China, the Eden Project in the United Kingdom, and the US Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings. At Coating Systems, Inc., we specialize in industrial coatings for a variety of industries, including construction and engineering, so we understand the latest industry trends. Today, we discuss some of the benefits of using this material for roofing.

Translucence

Translucence is one of the key reasons to use ETFE as a roofing material. Typically, this translucent copolymer sheeting is used in large-scale building projects, such as sports stadiums, train stations, and museums. Unlike other roofing materials, translucent sheeting allows natural light to flow into a building, creating an open, airy feel while cutting back on electricity. Choosing a translucent roofing material is not only an aesthetic choice but also a practical choice for those who wish to save energy and money.

Durability

Although ETFE is a lightweight material (lighter than glass, in fact) it is surprisingly strong and durable. During construction, the copolymer sheeting is extremely malleable and can stretch up to three times its length without losing its elasticity, meaning it will not crack or break under pressure. In fact, the copolymer sheets can actually handle 400 times their weight without breaking. With its strength and elasticity, ETFE can handle extreme weather conditions like storms, strong winds, and heavy snow, making it ideal for roofing.

Longevity

A roof requires a great deal of maintenance. For large-scale construction projects, repairing or replacing a roof can be time-consuming, inconvenient, and expensive. Luckily, ETFE has a long lifespan. Known to withstand the demands of extreme weather conditions, this material can go several decades without having to be replaced. In fact, some of the earliest applications of this material have lasted over 30 years without replacement. Some experts predict that an ETFE roof can last up to 50 years before it needs replacing.
