Here are some case studies of custom applications we’ve done that we’d like to share.
Coating Systems was approached by ITW, who was looking for coatings for Steel Ring Bosch Cups to be applied to luxury sports cars. Our process was to take the coating they were already using and reverse engineer a newer, more durable, and more efficient coating. This new and efficient coating was environmentally friendly, PTFE compatible, and petro vapor resistant. The coating was also resistant to galling, the process by which metal surfaces begin to show wear through sliding against one another. Our Coating Systems dry film lubrication was applied to some 100,000 Steel Ring Bosch Cups in about a month, a testament to the quality of our services.
In this case, Coating Systems was approached by a first-tier automotive manufacturer with the job to develop a coating for their seat belts. Because we know how important seat belts are for automotive safety, potentially saving lives in auto accidents, we took the job very seriously. The auto manufacturer needed a better product than what they were using, and Coating Systems had the solution. The manufacturer needed something set up for mass production, and they needed the process to be done onsite. Coating systems had the production line functional within six weeks, and that production line churned out 400,000lbs of material every month for a whole year. For the job, Coating Systems used a cold rolled steel that had been baked in a 42-ton brick furnace. The additional process of cold rolling after the heat treatment allowed a sleeker finish and greater strength under tension, yielding a stronger seat belt overall.
When a high-end financial institution approached us at Coating Systems with an opportunity to work on a credit card, we took it. Our job was to develop a magnetic chemical coating that would allow the card to support a magnetic strip, a hologram, and a signature panel. Using standard plastic credit card manufacturing methods, we fashioned such a chemical coating, but suitable for a steel, rather than a plastic, credit card. The result was a coating that was more durable than standard coatings, it was less expensive than standard coatings, and it was better suited for frequent swiping.
