How to Properly Remove a Rubber Grommet

A single rubber grommet

Installing rubber grommets can be a tricky task. For them to work efficiently, especially in an industrial context, they need to be installed correctly. However, it is also important to know how to properly remove them, because if they are removed incorrectly your equipment can be harmed. Removing grommets incorrectly can also make it difficult to install your next grommet. Today, Coating Systems will explain how to properly remove a rubber grommet.

1. Accessing the Rubber Grommet

It’s important to remove rubber grommets correctly, but the process is actually quite simple. First, you must gain access to the grommet, which might be the toughest part. If the grommet is under the hood of your car or in a hard drive, reaching it can be a little bit difficult. The most important thing to remember here is to not struggle with your equipment while trying to find it. The last thing you want to do is damage the overall piece of machinery you are working on while searching for the old grommet.

2. Use A Screwdriver

The second step of this process is actually removing the grommet. There are two primary ways to remove a rubber grommet, and each depends on what the grommet is being used for. If your grommet is being used in an exterior application without any internal parts blocking it, you can easily remove it with a flathead screwdriver.

To give an example, some saddlebags on motorcycles have rubber grommets to help hold them to the motorcycle. In these instances, you should be able to easily put a flathead screwdriver in between the metal and the grommet and squeeze the grommet out.

3. Cut if Needed

If your rubber grommet is located on the interior of an application medium, such as the inside of an electronic device, you may have wires or other parts running through it. If you cannot simply squeeze the grommet out with a flathead screwdriver, you can carefully cut it with a razor blade. You will need to be cautious, however, to not cut the wires the grommet is protecting.
