Coating Systems: 3 More Reasons for O-ring Failure

At Coating Systems, we take the lifespan of your o-rings very seriously, because the lifespan of your o-rings will affect the lifespan of your processes and machinery. With such dry film lubricants as Emralon TM001, Rilsan, and others, we’re sure to have the coating solution for any situation. We partner with names such as Arkema, Cerakote, Du Pont, and more to bring you a full array of products.
In a previous blog, Coating Systems gave attention to three common causes of o-ring failure. Those included poor o-ring design, compression set, and abrasion. Here we take a look at 3 more causes of o-ring failure, what they indicate, and how you can address the issue.

Excessive Compression

In our previous blog on common reasons for o-ring failure, we at Coating Systems discussed compression set, which is the tendency of a substance to remain misshapen after significant pressure is applied. When you perform a failure analysis and find that your seal has two flattened sides where it meets application surfaces, it’s possible that your o-ring is failing because of excessive compression. This may also cause splits or cracks in the o-ring. Excessive compression may be a sign of a need for greater heat or pressure resistance.

Corrosion

O-rings that have been exposed to corrosive chemicals may present a significant change in color, bubbles or blisters, splits, or cracks. If you notice this kind of damage during a failure analysis, it is likely that the o-ring has either been improperly coated or has been introduced to a new chemical that should not be in the process environment. Depending on the issue, you may either need to repair your machinery, or you may need a more reliable o-ring coating solutions company.

Heat Damage

Heat damage will present during a failure analysis as cracks and is usually accompanied by some degree of compression set, which is caused by excessive heat. This issue is caused either by machinery that is heating beyond its expected temperatures, or an o-ring that is improperly coated to handle the heat.
